Farm Market Manager

This is a brand new, hands on position at Vessel Meats. As our farm market business grows we are looking to find someone to help manage all aspects of our farm market business. This role will require a motivated self-starter who can work independently, make decisions and embrace farm market culture. The expectation for this position is the successful candidate will bear the responsibility for the success and growth of the farmer’s market business, reporting to the owner, in this leadership role to create space for other avenues of business growth.

This position is a full time position that will be 40 hours over a Thursday to Sunday work week. Thursday and Friday will be lighter prep days (approx. 8 hours) to ramp up to working at and supporting the three farm market locations. Saturdays will be early starts every week (530 am) and be a long day of 10-12 hours. Sundays will be an approximate 8 am to 5 pm. This position is a weekend position with two weeks scheduled vacation annually in January. Weekends off are limited to nil in this position.

This role will involve working at the farm market every week, setting up and tearing down the booth, selling meat and educating and liaising with clients. Supporting other market leads and recruiting and scheduling market helpers – filling in the gaps as required. This role will include transporting product to and from the shop and working with various market managers at the various locations to ensure that our business is a productive and healthy part of the various communities we are members of. This role will involve light preparation of products (breakfast sandwiches) and supporting the production team at the main shop during the beginning of the week (Thurs/Fri); transporting and moving products between markets and the shop throughout the weekend (Fri/Sat), selling, packaging and returning unsold product to the shop (Sat/Sun). Driving a refrigerated cube van will be required and the successful candidate will have to be able to comply with our driving insurance requirements.

Skills and Traits we are looking for:

  • Formal experience with food handling and safe food handlers

  • Outgoing personality who enjoys building and cultivating relationships

  • Genuine excitement about food, learning about meat as well as learning about the political food map here in Nova Scotia.

  • Clean driving abstract and confident driver with over 2 years driving experience.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills, communication skills and the ability to coordinate small teams of 10 people

  • Ability to see though work until the project is done.

  • Willing and able to work under pressure for short periods of time.

  • Able and willing to absorb the values of the business and act within those values when making decisions.

  • Ability to stand for 8 hours + and lift 60 lbs at a time

 

We will provide training to meet food safety and business compliance but candidates should be able to demonstrate how their experience is relatable to this position.
